Orientation & First-Year Experience

Late Orientation

Late Orientation

The final orientation programs for Fall 2008 will be held on August 19 and 20, at 8:30 a.m. and 9:45 a.m. on both days.  They are an abbreviated version of the more comprehensive sessions offered earlier this spring and summer.

The non-refundable New Student Fee is $75 (cash, check, or money order payable to Northern Illinois University or online credit card payment).  This fee can be paid prior to orientation or at the time of check-in on your pre-scheduled date.  The fee covers the cost of materials, staffing, facilities, and administration of the program.

Your orientation program will consist of:

  • an explanation of Northern’s degree requirements and an overview of student services
  • an explanation of Northern’s registration system
  • an opportunity to complete placement and/or proficiency testing
  • a meeting with your undergraduate college
  • academic advising
  • an opportunity to obtain your NIU OneCard (photo ID).

Check-in for the two sessions will begin each day at 8:00 a.m. and 9:15 a.m. in the Capitol Room located on the main level in the Holmes Student Center.  You are strongly encouraged to bring a copy of your Degree Progress Report (accessed through your MyNIU Self Service Center) and a copy of your final transcript.  If you have not already done so, final transcripts need to be sent to the Admissions Office.

It is best to plan on a full day for your orientation session although the process will be quicker for some students.  There is no family orientation program offered on these dates due to space and staffing limitations.

Parking on the above dates is available in the Visitor Parking Lot at a cost of $5 per day.  We recommend that you arrive early to allow ample time to reach the orientation site.
